Nathaniel Bassey completed his primary and secondary education in Lagos, Nigeria. He completed two years of his undergraduate study in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Lagos (Unilag).
While he was yet a student in Unilag, Nathaniel Bassey moved to London after he was accepted to study Politics and International Relations at the University of London.
He continued on to Middlesex University Summer School, where he attended a few music courses, among them popular music and music business.

Nathaniel Bassey launched his music ministry in 1993. He listened to a lot of instrumental music growing up, as well as highlife, jazz, Rex Lawson, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davies, and other artists.
As a young boy, Nathaniel wanted to become a jazz artiste who played afrocentric, jazz, highlife, etc. He did this until his life’s story changed.
Prior to becoming born again and having a personal relationship with God, it had always been about the music for him. His focus then shifted from the music to knowing God; he used music to communicate God’s love.
